# Morton's neuroma

In Morton's neuroma a nerve between the metatarsal bones – usually between the third and fourth toe – becomes irritated and thickened. This causes tingling, numbness or a shooting, burning pain.

#### Symptoms and causes
- Tingling or numbness in two toes
- Shooting or burning pain, as if there is a fold in your sock
- Relief when you take off the shoe and massage the foot

Narrow shoes, high heels and splay foot squeeze the metatarsals together and increase the risk of a neuroma.

#### How handmade insoles help
A metatarsal pad in the insole spreads the metatarsals slightly so the nerve is pinched less. Together with roomier footwear this is a safe first step. To be honest: how well insoles work for a neuroma has hardly been tested in good studies yet. If complaints persist, we refer you on.

#### What you can do – and when to see a doctor
Wear shoes with a wide toe box and low heel. If complaints persist, a doctor may consider an injection or other treatment.

If the pain does not improve after a few weeks, if there is swelling, redness or loss of sensation, or if you have diabetes or rheumatism, also have the complaint assessed by your GP.
